The formal requirements to be a Regent Captain are that he should be over 25 and a San Marino national.

The holiday goes all the way back to 1243 - which is a good indicator of how politically stable San Marino has been over the centuries; many of the same rituals from that time are still observed in this part of the world.

Harking back to Roman times, having two heads of state is the equivilant of ancient Roman Consuls, of which there would have originally been two.

The holiday denotes the time at which Captain Regents are replaced.
